The Alpha's Huntress - Chapter 13 (2024)

Evelyn

Just as the words left Mia's mouth. I heard its heavy breathing down the hall and its clawed feet scraping against the marbled floor as it headed toward us. My heart sprang in my throat as I jumped into action."Mia. You have to calm down, sweetie. I know you are scared, but I promise I will not let anything happen to you. Do you trust me?"

Mia's misty eyes stared back at me, and she nodded her little head. I opened a door that led into what looked to be a pantry and shoved her inside.

"Listen to me. No matter what happens or what you hear, you are only to open this door if Rook or I come for you. Do you understand?"

Tiny tears cascaded down her face, but again, she nodded in agreement.

I closed the door securely and pushed a heavy wooden cabinet full of spices and other dry goods in front of the pantry door. It wasn't much, but at least it was something other than just a door between Mia and the beast.

I didn't have time to look for anything else to use as a weapon other than the knife I already had in my hand. I turned, and the werewolf was already coming through the door. A shudder of revulsion ran down my spine. I don't think I would ever get used to the hideous creature before me. I sized it up quickly as I circled the kitchen island. This one was even larger than the one I killed in the woods.

It sniffed the air. "Female," it growled.

"Is that the only word you bastards know?"

"Dominant female. Must take to alpha," it repeated.

"I think not."

It lunged at me. I jumped on top of the kitchen island, bringing my knife down simultaneously and slicing one of its ears off. It wailed in pain, but I merely managed to piss it off more.

It came for me again, with more speed and fueled by anger. It swiped at me with its razor-sharp claws, but I managed to stay out of its reach. I leaped on its back and put it in a chokehold. I tried to stab it in the heart with the knife in my other hand, but it grabbed the hand holding the knife with its huge meaty paw and slung it from my grip. I tightened my hold around its neck and squeezed with all my might, but I couldn't bring the thing down.

It tried to shake me off, but I held on like my life depended on it because it did. It rushed backward quickly and slammed me against the wall. My back and head collided with a loud crack against the wall. With each slam, my grip was lessening. I had to do something quickly before I lost consciousness altogether.

I glanced to my left, saw a knife block, reached for it, and pulled out a cleaver. I almost dropped it as the beast slammed me against the wall again, my head exploding in pain. My vision began to blur, but I somehow managed to slip the cleaver in front of the werewolf and sever its throat with one swift slice.

The body fell to the ground, taking me with it. The crash to the floor completely knocked the wind from my lungs. I was lying in a pool of blood, but try as I might, I couldn't get up.

I heard Mia wail from the other side of the pantry door. I tried to get to her, but my head was spinning in confusion, and I could not make my legs do as they were told.

"Mia, it's ok. It's all over."

I hoped my voice would soothe her until I could get to her. A loud growl from the door had my pulse racing. I turned my head and saw another werewolf coming towards me. My body screamed in pain as I tried to get on my feet, but I couldn't move or even think straight. So, this was how I was going to die? At the hands of a werewolf in a lycan's home. Typical me.

What I wouldn't give to see Roary and Pops running through the door right now. A loud crash to my left made me and the werewolf turn towards the shattered window above the kitchen sink.

The largest lycan I had ever seen just jumped through the window and was now crouched low and ready to pounce. It was solid black with massive bulging muscle covering its body. My heart sank to the pit of my stomach as it quickly glanced in my direction with its large glowing golden eyes.

I knew those eyes; I had seen them before. Rook? The werewolf growled at the alpha but took a tentative step backward, hoping to escape out the door it had just entered, but it was too late. Rook attacked, going straight for the werewolf's jugular.

In a matter of seconds, it was over. I could have definitely used his help earlier if he could kill a werewolf that quickly. I don't know if that realization sat well with me or not. How strong was he to put a werewolf down that fast?

I turned my head away and tried to get up again, but the best I could manage was getting my body to a seated position, but at least that was better than laying on my stomach. I gripped my head as the world began to sway.

"Easy."

I was vaguely aware that Rook was before me, back in his human form, and he was running his hands all over my body. His eyes returned to their normal hazel color as they searched my body for injuries. He slipped an arm around my back and the other underneath my knees, but I stopped him from lifting me off the ground.

"Mia," I breathed. "I'll be fine. Get Mia out of here."

Raising my arm was a struggle, but I managed to point toward the pantry door. Rook eyed me with concern but eventually left me to check on Mia. I heard his strong, confident voice as he cooed to Mia in hopes of calming her down. Her little voice was strangled with tears, and it broke my heart.

"Where's Eve?" Mia said, and I smiled to myself.

"She's fine. I'll let you see her later, but first, I must get you out of here. I want you to bury your head in my chest and not look until I tell you to. Understood?"

Mia mumbled her agreement, and my eyes followed Rook as he cradled Mia tight to his chest and walked her out of the kitchen and down the hall.
